Many industries have taken a hit because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but few can say to have been as strongly affected as the film industry. Because of social distancing guidelines, most movie theaters around the country have been closed since March.
While many plan to reopen by the end of July, going to the movies should still be seen as an unnecessary health risk. Fortunately, there’s a better alternative to the traditional movie-going experience: drive-in movie theaters.
Drive-in movie theaters were once extremely popular. They reached their heyday after World War II, with an estimated 5,000 theaters around the country in the late 1950s and mid-1960s. In 2020, only 306 drive-in theaters remain in operation in the United States.
In response to COVID-19, the film industry has had to adjust its approach to releasing films, and many studios have elected to release new pictures directly on digital platforms like Netflix. However, IMAX, Tribeca Enterprises, and AT&T have recently teamed up to create a summer movie program that will play a selection of new, classic, and independent films at drive-in theaters across the country.
“We’re excited to give people something to look forward to this summer and reinvent a classic movie-going experience for communities to enjoy together safely,” said Robert De Niro, co-founder of Tribeca Enterprises.
Could social distancing lead to the rise of a drive-in renaissance? Certainly, many outdoor gathering places that are currently unused could be converted into drive-in movie theaters. At Wantagh Mazda, our favorite drive-in theaters are the ISH Events’ Drive In & Outdoor Movies in Plainview and the Skyline Drive in NYC, which is perfectly positioned in Brooklyn to offer a lovely Manhattan skyline view while you enjoy your movie.
Wantagh Mazda wishes you and your family a safe and healthy summer. Remember to contact us with all of your vehicular needs.
If you want to give your significant other a more meaningful and affordable present than golf clubs or clothes for Father’s Day, consider giving him a handmade present. Your partner will appreciate these DIY Father’s Day gifts, which are both creative and easy enough for your children to make.
If your partner is a self-proclaimed grill master, gift him a decorated spatula. Simply buy a new spatula, and then let your children paint or add stickers as they please. They could add a special message, their dad’s name or something artistic on the spatula.
For this gift, all you need is a jar, a blank sticker and your partner’s favorite snack food. Your children can fill the jar with snacks, like chocolate, nuts and pretzels. Then, they can leave a Father’s Day note on the sticker and stick it to the jar.
With personalized bottle tags, your partner can have something lovely to read each time he grabs a drink. To make these tags, your children can either create their own messages for their dad or find funny puns online. Then, you can print these messages on card stock and affix them to his drink of choice.

If you’re in the market for an eco-friendly vehicle, check out the upcoming Mazda MX-30. Its battery pack will boast the lowest lifetime carbon footprint possible, according to Christian Schultze, the head of research and development at Mazda Europe.
It achieves this by using a smaller battery pack, which takes fewer resources to produce, and consumes less electricity when it’s being charged. For example, long-range batteries require more rare earth metals to manufacture, making them both expensive to replace and less sustainable to produce.
While a smaller battery pack results in a shorter driving range, the MX-30 delivers plenty of power to get you around town. It offers an estimated 130 miles of range, which is more than sufficient for the average driver’s daily commute. If you’re craving more range, Mazda is rumored to be crafting an internal-combustion-powered range extender that should help the Mazda MX-30 stay on the road even longer.
The Mazda MX-30 is expected to enter production in late 2020, although no U.S. release date has been confirmed yet. Only time will tell if we’ll see this innovative EV stateside anytime soon.

Here in New York, winter is a serious topic. Almost without fail we get multiple major snowstorms each year that can leave snow on the ground until spring arrives. Because of this, it is very important that you prepare your vehicle with the tools and supplies you’ll need in case you get stranded on the side of the road. Here are a few items to include in your winter emergency kit.
Jumper Cables. You never know when you might need a jump or find someone who needs some help. If you travel in more remote areas, consider a portable jump starter so you don’t have to wait for someone to pass.
Ice Scraper. While any number of items can scrape the snow and ice off your car, a dedicated, heavy-duty scraper with an added brush will do the best job. Keep in mind that you should clear as much of the snow off your car as you can, including the headlights and taillights.
Small Shovel. If your car gets buried in the snow or stuck in a snow drift, a shovel will be the easiest way to get out. You should also keep a bag of sand or kitty litter in your trunk so you can pour some under your wheels for extra traction.
Winter Gear. If you are stranded and can’t get on the road again, you will need to stay warm. Pack a blanket, extra gloves, and other winter gear.
Stay even safer this winter by staying top of your vehicle’s routine maintenance this winter. Give us a call here at Wantagh Mazda to set up an appointment.
If you have seen the movie “Minority Report,” it gives you a good idea of what the future of autonomous driving could look like. The driverless car industry has split autonomous driving technology into five levels. What you see in the movies, is level 5, meaning no human interaction required. Though many other automakers are working towards this goal, Mazda is taking a unique approach to vehicle autonomy.
Mazda has long been focused on giving drivers a thrilling driving experience. While having a car that can drive itself is a novel idea, it doesn’t offer any hands-on thrills. Instead, Mazda is focusing its future autonomous driving technology on being a supplemental function.
The Mazda Co-Pilot System would only activate if the driver needed help. For example, if the driver suffered a seizure or was attempting to drive while drunk.
Mazda deputy general manager Matsuhiro Tanaka articulated the company’s vision for autonomous tech. “What we are focused on is that it always has to be the joy of driving that comes first, then, should anything happen to the driver that renders the situation dangerous, then the autonomous driving functions will kick in and take them to a safe place.”
Tanaka went on to say that Mazda isn’t trying to develop a new technology. It is simply working to incorporate the existing technology in an innovative new way that will help protect the driver and everyone else on the road.
