2021 Mazda CX-5 Earns Top Score in IIHS Side Impact Test

2021 Mazda CX-5 | Wantagh, NY

In October, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested 20 new small SUVs to see how they would hold up to a tougher side impact test. Only one vehicle earned the IIHS’ top score for side impact: the 2021 Mazda CX-5.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5, which is an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, was the lone small SUV the IIHS rated good for side impact. IIHS’ new test uses a heavier, 4,180-pound barrier moving at 37 mph. Previous tests featured a 3,300-pound barrier traveling at 31 mpg. The Ring Structure unibody construction of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 allowed it to withstand the impact better than the other 19 small SUVs tested.

IIHS says that the goal of the new test is to more accurately simulate the effects of a crash with another SUV or pickup. And of all the vehicles put to that test, only the Mazda CX-5 passed with flying colors.

“We developed this new test because we suspected there was room for more progress, and these results confirm that,” says IIHS President David Harkey. “The good rating for the CX-5 shows that robust protection in a more severe side crash is achievable.”

Mazda continues to ensure that its vehicles offer the latest in active, passive, and driver-assist safety features. The 2021 Mazda CX-5 and other vehicles in the new Mazda lineup include standard i-ACTIVSENSE® safety technologies including Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection.

Every 2021 Mazda Model Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+

New Mazda Lineup | Wantagh, NY

Every model in the 2021 Mazda lineup has earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, including the Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, Mazda6, Mazda CX-3, Mazda CX-30, Mazda CX-5, and Mazda CX-9.

The Top Safety Pick+ award is the highest safety honor granted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, one highly coveted by all manufacturers. Many brands do not manage to earn even the standard TSP award for all of their models, least of all the more difficult TSP+ award.

In fact, Mazda is one of only two brands to have managed this impressive feat, and the only non-luxury brand to do so. To do it, all of its models had to earn the maximum safety rating in six crashworthiness evaluations ranging from moderate overlap front crash tests to head restraint tests. In other words, Mazda vehicles not only deliver awesome performance, flexibility, and interiors on par with luxury brands, but also top-notch safety.

It doesn’t stop there. To get a TSP+ award, vehicles also needed to earn an advanced or superior rating for both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crash avoidance. Every single Mazda model earned the top superior rating for the former, and three out of seven also earned the top superior rating for the latter.

Finally, to earn a TSP+ award rather than just a TSP award, the Mazda lineup needed to be offered with standard headlights that provide good or acceptable visibility.

In summary, if you’re looking to shop for a premium-feeling brand that provides excellent value and style along with industry-leading safety regardless of the model you buy, take a look at the 2021 Mazda model lineup at Wantagh Mazda in Wantagh, New York. We have the 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award-winning lineup in stock and ready to lease.

2019 Mazda CX-9 Interior

When you plan to drive with your dog, it pays to find a car that’s spacious, low, and provides a smooth ride. Check out these Mazda vehicles for pet owners, all of which have been applauded for being safe and comfortable for both animals and their owners.

Mazda CX-3

If your small family includes a single pup, the Mazda CX-3 might be the perfect fit. This subcompact crossover is small and easy to maneuver and park, making it ideal for urban settings.

You can also fold the back seats down to give your dog 44.5 cubic feet to stretch out in. Another bonus in this model is the standard rear-heating ducts and air conditioning, which will help keep your dog comfortable in any season.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is a slightly larger crossover with five spacious seats. If you plan to travel with more than one dog, or with children as well, this is a great fit. Even with the rear seats up and the kids buckled in, there’s still 30.9 cubic feet of space for your furry friend behind the seats.

The Mazda CX-5 has low height, so it will be easy for dogs to enter and exit the vehicle. When you’re on the road, your pets will have an easier time relaxing, thanks to a smooth and quiet ride.

Mazda CX-9

With seven seats and a maximum of 72.1 cubic feet of cargo space, the Mazda CX-9 is the most spacious of the canine-friendly Mazda models. There’s plenty of room to store one or two crates, while still having room for human passengers.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Road Trip Perks

A functional vehicle and luxurious form aren’t mutually exclusive features. In fact, they combine together perfectly in the 2017 Mazda CX-5. The CX-5 proves that a luxury-level crossover doesn’t have to be expensive or lack many of the utility-driven features that drivers love. To drive our point home, here are a few road trip perks of the Mazda CX-5.

Spacious Interior

The Mazda CX-5 is capable of seating up to five passengers, with plenty of space between them. There’s a total of 103.6 cu ft. of passenger space. No longer will kids be screaming about cramped conditions as you venture into New York City.

Having a full crossover will still leave plenty of room for cargo. With the rear seats up, the Mazda CX-5 offers a generous 30.9 cu ft. of cargo space. With the rear seats folded down, that space nearly doubles with 59.6 cu ft. of space.

Weight

There’s little doubt that maneuverability is key, especially when driving through urban areas like the Big Apple. The Mazda CX-5 weighs in at under 3,600 lbs., making it one of the few crossovers with extremely responsive handling.

Trailering

As for trailering capability, the Mazda CX-5 is capable of towing up to 2,000 lbs. when properly equipped. The standard four-cylinder engine offers a healthy 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque.

If that isn’t convincing enough, Mazda took the 2017 CX-5 on a fifteen-city, nationwide tour to prove just how great it is for a road trip.

Mazda Makes Drastic Improvements to Redesigned 2017 CX-5

Redesigned 2017 CX-5 | Wantagh Mazda | Wantagh, NY

Redesigned

Mazda debuted the Cx-5 crossover back in 2013, right at the front of the crossover craze that swept the United States auto industry and was poised to take the world by storm. As a compact crossover, it was made to have sporty appeal and a fun driving experience in addition to having the versatility and space of a larger vehicle. Now, the redesigned 2017 CX-5 is back and better than ever with a long list of improvements.

New vs. Old

Prior to its redesign, the Mazda CX-5 was renowned for being attractive, a fun ride, and fuel efficient. However, there were a few issues – such as a noisy engine and a cheap interior. The new interior is packed with rich materials and the outgoing engine and transmission duo is being replaced with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a minor power boost. Additionally, inside the CX-5, the cabin is better insulated for a more relaxing experience.

The redesigned 2017 CX-5 still deliver the same driving experience and fuel economy we’d expect from a Mazda. With a lightweight and aerodynamic build that makes for more nimble handling while preserving fuel economy. Curious? Stop in Wantagh Mazda today and take the 2017 Mazda CX-5 for a test drive; it’ll blow your mind.
